Description: (1 3/4 inches) Rounded, triangular shell. Strong concentric ridges and strong radial ribbing from a raised crisscross pattern of ridges. Crenulations on bottom edge. Lateral and cardinal teeth on hinge. Lunule and small pallial sinus.
Color: Graying yellow-white exterior. Occasionally has a few lavender radial stripes. Interiro usually purple.
Habitat: Commonly lives on sandy bottoms of sounds and shallow offshore waters. Shells common on sound and ocean beaches.
Range: New Jersey to Brazil.
Notes: Although it is sweet-tasting than the northern quahog, it is eaten only rarely.
